I've never been a big fan of oatmeal. I'm just not. I buy a can of quick oats once a year to make birthday cookies for my father. I usually have to throw out last years can at the same time. My kids have been known to occasionally eat the microwavable, loaded with sugar, mush variety so you'll almost always find some of that in my pantry.
What I am a fan of though is a quick, easy, wholesome breakfast. Bonus if it also tastes good! Well, It doesn't get much easier than overnight oats. So when I was presented with the opportunity to review Maker Oats, I thought it might be worth revisiting my aversion to oatmeal.
The first thing I noticed when the box arrived was that the packets look pretty. That might sound superficial but I'm not talking about the packaging. You can see the high quality ingredients. Thick cut organic oats with dried apples, raisins, currants, almonds, chia, dates, and coconut. I have to admit it looks delicious. Also worth noting, Maker Oats are USDA certified organic, with no sugar added.
Preparation is easy peasy. Pop the oats into a bowl, pour in your favorite liquid. Wait until the bubbles stop and then pour in a little more to make sure they're all covered—about 2/3 to 3/4 of a cup should do it. You can use water, milk, milk-substitute, yogurt, anything really.
We were all excited to give them a try. Surprisingly my kids ate most of the bowl! We did toss one bowl in the microwave for my older daughter who is used to warm oatmeal. The flavors mesh really well together. The texture of Maker Oats is much better than the instant variety! I may be a convert. I'm very excited to see what else I can do with these.
