We live in Arizona. Swimming and pools are a part of life. It's hard to miss the news stories and the staggering amount of drownings in our state. TWICE the national average in 2016.
When my 8 year old daughter was about 15 months, we were playing in Grandma's backyard and before I even knew what was happening, she stumbled backwards and fell into the in-ground pool. I stood there for a moment and thought, she'll pop back up and I can reach in and grab her. As quickly as that thought entered my mind I realized she was NOT coming back up and mom instinct kicked in. I dove into that pool fully clothed. Shoes, socks, everything. Right then I decided she needed to learn how to swim.
BUT - We don't have many options in Casa Grande/Maricopa. We did 3 consecutive years of lessons at the Rec Center and I didn't feel like my girls were learning much. The classes were fast tracked into 2 week blocks during the summer and there were 8-10 kids in each class. I spent all of last summer trying to find an instructor who would come to my pool and teach them how to swim without breaking the bank.
My girls now 6 & 8 are water babies and have taught themselves how to "doggy paddle" and get around the pool but they still lack actual swimming/lifesaving skills. We were invited to an open swim earlier this month at Aqua-Tots swim school in Ahwatukee. I have wanted to check out swim schools for some time so I jumped at the chance to go. It was a cloudy/cool day and I was unsure if we would stay long. I didn't even bring my own swim suit because I thought for sure it would be too cold to get in the water!
Let me tell you, I was blown away as soon as we entered the building. I immediately regretted my decision to not bring a swim suit! There is an enclosed glass pool area, and when you step inside the ambient temperature matches the water perfectly. There is no acclimation period at all. You can jump right in and immediately be comfortable! My kiddos also felt immediately comfortable with the staff and coaches. While the kids were enjoying the warm water and fun games, Kari explained their swim program to me. There is a MAX of 4 kids per class! (More details on that below.) I eagerly signed up my girls that day. We are all excited about this new journey and getting to share it with all of you. I sure wish someone would have introduced me to Aqua-Tots sooner!

Family Friendly Facility
When you walk into our school, you’ll be greeted with bright and fun colors, island music, and friendly front desk staff. We carry many of the items you may need for your lesson, including swim diapers, goggles and earplugs. We also offer a small selection of snacks and drinks for busy families on the go. Whatever you need, we’ve got you covered!
Quality Swim Lessons
At our school, your child is not just another swimmer. Our highly trained, energetic instructors will call your child by name at lesson time. Our instructors have trained over 40 hours to be certified to teach Aqua-Tots lessons and they participate in ongoing training and evaluations to maintain high levels of quality. We take into consideration each child’s learning style and behavior so our instructors can focus on the skills and progression unique to each student.
Comfortable Viewing Area for Parents and Guests
Parents can watch lessons from the comfy red viewing chairs, separated from the pool by a glass wall, or choose to get some work done, read a book or catch up with other parents. This way, you can avoid the heat of the pool but still watch your child’s progress during lessons.
Our school provides free Wi-Fi! For any children that are waiting with you, we have a cozy play area or they can do homework.
During the lesson, the comfort of our heated pool enables everyone to focus on learning. When it’s time to get out of the pool, showers are available poolside to rinse off the chlorine.
Amenities for All
After the lesson, you’ll love all the amenities available in the locker room. We have lockers, changing rooms, wall-mounted hair dryers, lotions and more. But by far, our favorite thing is the swimsuit dryer! In just 30 seconds, suits can be spun nearly dry.
Flexible and Convenient
We also know that young families today require flexibility. We offer lessons and scheduling to suit everyone’s needs. You can choose individual or small group lessons and choose to come once, twice or even three times per week. And from years of experience, we know that little kids get sick. We are always happy to help with rescheduling makeup lessons.
